US online renewal: strict square 600x600 JPEG. The tool frames your face to the official template, then fits the file inside 54KB-10MB.
Do: head and shoulders, face fills the middle
Don't: subject too far from camera
Don't: head too big or cut off
Don't: background not plain
Don't: shadows on the face
Do: plain light wall, face a window for even light
Take the photo against a plain white or off-white wall (light grey or cream for the UK). Stand about half a meter in front of the wall so your shadow stays off it, and face a window so the light is even. US and DV photos must not be digitally altered, so this tool only crops and sizes - it never edits your face or swaps the background.
Almost every rejection comes down to the same short list: wrong pixel dimensions, a file outside the size band, a background that is not plain, or a head that fills too little (or too much) of the frame. Since January 2026 the US State Department also runs automated screening on digital uploads, and a flagged photo means no fee refund. This page removes the first two causes entirely - pixels and file size are set to the official spec automatically - and the face framing and live checks cover the head size and background.
For digital US passport applications the photo must be a strict square: between 600x600 and 1200x1200 pixels in JPEG format. The file must be 54 KB to 10 MB for online renewal, or no more than 240 KB for the DV Lottery. This tool produces exactly 600x600 and fits the file inside the band you pick.
UK online applications need a portrait photo at least 600x750 pixels in JPEG, between 50 KB and 10 MB. The background must be plain light grey or cream, not white, and the photo must have been taken within the last month - the strictest recency rule of any major country.
The Passport Seva online portal asks for a 630x810 pixel JPEG under 250 KB. Consulate and VFS submissions instead want a square 51x51 mm photo, 350 to 1000 pixels per side, between 20 and 100 KB. The Indian e-Visa wants a square JPEG of 10 to 300 KB. Pick the preset that matches your route - they are not interchangeable.
Yes. The tool finds your face in the photo and frames it automatically so the head height and eye level match the official template for the document you picked. You can still drag and zoom to adjust the framing by hand before you download.
